This Mid-Century architecture tour app features 82 sites in Palm Springs. My review is based on using the app in the field on a second generation iPad (WiFi only, no cell) running OS 6.1.3.
The app divides the 82 properties into 3 geographic sections (north, south and central Palm Springs). Tours can also be viewed by architect - 12 architects are featured.
The app content is superb. Along with address, map and access information for each site, there is audio narration, text, photos and videos by the following:
Photographs by Julius Shulman, Dan Chavkin and others, videography by Adam Duplay Productions, text written by educator, architectural preservation advocate and tour guide Robert Imber (check out “Palm Springs Modern Tour” on Yelp) and audio narration by architecture historian and author Peter Moruzzi.
Several other user reviews note long download times for this 994 MB file. Download time for me was 20 minutes at a speed of 15-17 Mbps via DSL to an Apple Airport Base Station to a late 2006 iMac. The app installation onto my iPad took less than 2 minutes. Upon opening the app for the first time, there was a brief update that took less than a minute.
Other user reviews complain about the app crashing. I have experienced occasional crashing particularly when using the arrow buttons located in the upper right hand corner of the screen. This seems to happen when trying to advance quickly through a long series of screens. I have found that using the “Property List” button located in the upper left hand of each tour screen minimizes the crashing.
I have no affiliation with anyone associated with the production of this app. I am an architect who loves mid-century design and have enjoyed using this app and look forward to using it again on my next visit to Palm Springs. 5 stars for content and UI, 3 stars for stability. 4 stars overall. Highly recommended.
